National Tri-Hull Powerboat Championship

Powerboat Championship Races Draw Huge Crowds in Galveston!

Huge crowds filled the viewing areas to capacity at the first National Tri-Hull Powerboat Championship, held at the Texas Coast Boat Show in Galveston, Texas. The two days of racing produced some dramatic action, with boats airborne for much of the course, creating plenty of excitement for the crowds, many of whom had never witnessed such extreme water sport activity.

Weather conditions were ideal with beautiful sunshine for the three days and just enough of a breeze to make for some great wave action for the racers to contend with. The oval course, marked by bright orange buoys and monitored by the US Coast Guard for safety zones, was in a perfect setting in the ship channel and able to be viewed by everyone including the occasional cruise ship as they left Galveston on their way for destinations abroad.

Winners of the Saturday races were Cory Walker - Stafford, TX in 1st place, Michael Schubert – Richmond, TX in 2nd and Kevin Teague - Richmond, TX in 3rd.  On Sunday, the finals, Cory Walker - Stafford, TX in 1st place, Jerry Rinker - Spring, TX in 2nd and Michael Schubert – Richmond, TX in 3rd.  Announcers kept the level of excitement up with great ongoing commentary, identifying racers with enough information on each to create favorites amongst the crowd.

The awards presentation of prize monies and trophies was another hit with attendees as each of the winners talked a little about the races and the challenges this new course had presented them with. Good hearted banter combined bragging rights with tongue in cheek comments, leaving the crowd to ask when they would be treated to this action packed event again.

We’ll be back was the response from the racers and next Fall couldn’t come soon enough was certainly the feeling from spectators.
